Inactivity due to injury, illness, pain, age, or surgery can lead to significant losses in muscle strength, mass, and tone. Research indicates that from the time of injury to three years post-surgery, we can lose:
5% to 40% of quadriceps strength[i]
9% to 27% of hamstring strength
These losses are not confined to the injured limb; they also affect uninjured limbs, with respective losses of 27% and 14%.
This decline occurs because of a reduction in the production and release of hormones essential for:
Cell repair
Satellite cell creation
Protein synthesis
Simultaneously, there is an increase in myostatin’s, proteins that break down muscle tissue.
The more muscle we lose, the longer it takes to return to normal activity.
Historically, the only way to enhance the production and output of these essential hormones has been through high-intensity exercise. However, after an injury or period of inactivity, such exercise may not be possible or well-tolerated.
